Ikkyū-san, often rendered as Ikkyu-san, is a clever young Buddhist acolyte featured in the popular anime series of the same name, Ikkyū-san. He is depicted as a witty and resourceful boy who uses his sharp intellect to solve problems and resolve disputes within his community.
Based loosely on the historical Zen Buddhist monk Ikkyū Sōjun (1394–1481), the anime character debuted in the animated TV series *Ikkyū-san*, which first aired in Japan on October 15, 1975, and ran until 1982.
In the anime, Ikkyū resides at Ankoku-ji Temple, where he studies Buddhism and hones his problem-solving skills. He is known for his signature thinking pose, where he wets his finger with his tongue and rotates his head before devising a solution.
